Poll results recently revealed more than 53% of New Mexicans say their biggest concerns this election cycle were the economy and crime. Both issues have been at the forefront of debate for Senate candidates Democrat Sen. Martin Heinrich and Republican Nella Domenici.(Ballotpedia)
In a poll released August 2024 from Emerson College and The Hill, nearly 1,000 New Mexicans were asked what issues matter the most to them and what their opinions were in regards to the 2024 election candidates. Many New Mexicans believe these are reasons as to why the state feels less safe.
Along with the economy and crime, healthcare and immigration made the list as topics of interest for voters this year.
Residents were able to participate in the poll for three days from August 20th to 22nd and results were released the following day. With the election approaching this November, these results show how New Mexicans are paying close attention to these issues when being discussed on the campaign trail.
In another weekly poll released by Emerson College shows Heinrich polling 12 points ahead of opponent Domenici, leading 49% to 37%. Heinrich is running for re-election and has built his platform on the promise of a safer and more prosperous New Mexico.(Source)
Economic opportunity is highlighted as an important topic on his campaign website, he is being considered the people’s choice for this November. In the past, his promise for economic growth has been a strong factor to gain points with voters. This run for re-election is no different as Heinrich’s popularity soars.
In an article from KRQE, political analyst Gabe Sanchez says this is following national trends. “Senator Heinrich has the name recognition; he’s got the credibility. His record is nearly spotless in terms of legislative, so he’s not vulnerable in any stretch of the imagination,” Sanchez says.
Both Emerson College and The Hill post poll results regularly in regards to the political climate. As we get closer to election day, New Mexican voters may shift their concerns to align with the candidate of their choice. For now, it appears that New Mexicans are taking the issues that could affect them into consideration when listening to the candidates and their campaign promises.
